Backstory
Simon is introduced as part of Nova's social circle at Sterlinford College. Compared with Nova's energetic personality and Cyrus's detached observation, Simon occupies something of a middle position.
He is willing to have fun and explore, but he also has enough caution to recognize when something is wrong.
This becomes particularly obvious at the abandoned Rollercoaster Park.
While exploring the park, Simon remembers its past and talks about the attractions that once existed there. He notices the strange duck statue and later notices that the shadows around the Chinese warrior statue appear to change after Emily photographs it.
When Nova discovers the leather-bound book in the basement, Simon hears the mysterious voice telling her to “Read it.”
Unlike Nova, Simon immediately warns her:
Don't read it.
His warning is ultimately ignored.
After Nova reads the book, the basement begins collapsing and the group desperately tries to escape. Simon survives the immediate collapse, but the story later reveals that he becomes part of something much darker.
At Legends Motel, Emily is instructed by Anthony to cook and eat a piece of meat. After following strange red footprints, she discovers Simon's corpse.
Cyrus eventually tells her:
“You ate him.”
The implication is that the meat Anthony gave Emily was connected to Simon's body.
Simon therefore becomes one of the first characters whose death is not merely a murder mystery—it becomes evidence that someone or something is deliberately manipulating the characters' actions.
Trivia
Simon is particularly important because he hears the same supernatural voice Nova hears.
That means the voice isn't simply something Nova imagined.
He also serves as a useful contrast to Nova:
Nova hears “Read it” and becomes curious.
Simon hears “Read it” and becomes suspicious.
Unfortunately, his caution doesn't save him.
His death also connects three otherwise separate threads:
Rollercoaster Park → Anthony → Emily → Simon's death.
That makes Simon's role larger than his relatively short screen time suggests.
And there's something especially disturbing about the way his death is handled: Simon doesn't simply die during the Rollercoaster Park collapse. His body subsequently becomes part of an experience designed for Emily.
That means his death appears to have been incorporated into whatever larger process is being carried out around her.
