Personality

Traits

  • Energetic and socially outgoing.
  • Naturally friendly and comfortable approaching people.
  • Curious about people she doesn't understand, particularly Cyrus.
  • Playful; frequently uses humor to break tension.
  • Optimistic and enthusiastic about opportunities to have fun.
  • Emotionally expressive compared with Cyrus's reserved nature.
  • Comfortable forming friendships quickly.
  • Observant enough to notice when someone is behaving strangely.
  • Protective and willing to help friends when something goes wrong.
  • Adaptable; can move between ordinary social situations and increasingly bizarre circumstances.
  • Tends to approach frightening situations with curiosity before fully appreciating the danger.
  • Has a strong attachment to her mother and appears to come from a supportive home environment.
  • Acts as a social bridge between Cyrus and the rest of the student group.

Flaws

  • Can underestimate danger because she initially treats unusual situations lightly.
  • Curiosity can lead her into places she should probably avoid.
  • Sometimes accepts strange explanations without examining them deeply enough.
  • Her desire to experience things with her friends can override caution.
  • Humor can become a way of defusing situations that actually require serious attention.
  • Being new to Havenfall means she lacks the background knowledge necessary to recognize some of its deeper dangers.
  • Can be influenced by the environment around her without immediately realizing it.
  • Doesn't always recognize when something she considers “weird” is actually dangerous.

Motivations

  • Building friendships in her new environment.
  • Understanding Cyrus and his unusual personality.
  • Enjoying her time at college.
  • Exploring Havenfall and discovering interesting places.
  • Spending time with Emily, Simon, Anthony, and the others.
  • Maintaining her connection with the people she has begun to trust.
  • Understanding the increasingly strange events occurring around her.

Hates

  • Being late.
  • Being unprepared for class.

  • Brings energy into otherwise tense situations.
  • Quickly establishes relationships with new people.
  • Willing to ask questions.
  • Can maintain composure during unusual situations.
  • Loyal toward her friends.
  • Her outsider perspective is valuable because she wasn't raised inside Havenfall's strange social environment.
  • Comfortable interacting with people who have very different personalities.
  • Able to keep moving forward after frightening experiences instead of immediately withdrawing.

Fears

  • Losing her friends.
  • Being trapped somewhere she doesn't understand.
  • The possibility that Havenfall isn't what she believes it is.
  • Being unable to protect herself or the people around her.
  • The Hole of Havenfall.
  • The unexplained phenomena surrounding the Rollercoaster Park.
  • Discovering that something has been influencing her without her knowledge.

Relationships

  • Cyrus Karmen — Classmate and friend. Nova is fascinated by Cyrus because of his strange, detached personality. She repeatedly tries to interact with him despite his tendency to isolate himself. Their personalities are almost opposites: Nova participates in the social world while Cyrus observes it.
  • Emily — Close friend within the student group. They make plans together, meet socially, and explore Havenfall with the others.
  • Simon — Friend and member of the same group. He shares Nova's interest in exploring unusual places but is sometimes more cautious when something feels genuinely wrong.
  • Anthony Matthews — Nova knows him as someone helpful and reliable. He helps her with Physics 101 and later helps the group during the Rollercoaster Park incident. However, Cyrus's suspicion of Anthony creates an interesting contrast between Nova's initial perception of him and the increasingly disturbing evidence surrounding him.
  • Her mother — A supportive figure in Nova's life. Their relationship is affectionate and comfortable, with Nova greeting her with a hug before leaving for college.
  • Havenfall — Nova is technically an outsider because she came from Ravenport. This makes her perspective important: she can question things that longtime Havenfall residents have apparently learned to accept.

Hobbies

  • Spending time with friends.
  • Exploring Havenfall.
  • Taking photographs.
  • Going to cafés and social gatherings.
  • Watching television with her mother.
  • Going out on free days.
  • Exploring abandoned or unusual places.
  • Joking around with friends.
  • Experiencing new things.

Backstory

Nova Zahwane arrives in Havenfall from Ravenport and quickly establishes herself as one of the most socially active members of the student group.

Her first significant connection is Cyrus, whom she immediately nicknames “Cyrus the Virus.” Rather than being put off by his strange behavior, Nova becomes curious about him. She notices that he skips classes, isolates himself, and sometimes stands completely still while staring at the sky, yet she continues treating him as a person rather than an outsider.

Nova's normality makes her perspective particularly useful. She approaches Havenfall as someone who hasn't spent her entire life accepting its peculiarities.

She joins Emily, Simon, and Anthony on their visit to the abandoned Rollercoaster Park. What begins as an ordinary exploration becomes one of the first major supernatural incidents involving the group. In the basement, Nova discovers a leather-bound book and hears a voice telling her to “Read it.” Simon also hears the voice and warns her not to.

Nova nevertheless reads the fable.

The resulting collapse of the basement becomes a turning point. She briefly sees something nonhuman behind Anthony, though she cannot fully process what she has witnessed.

Later, Nova accompanies Cyrus and ends up at the Hole of Havenfall. This is where her outsider status becomes especially important. When Cyrus tells her that a baby recently emerged from the Hole, she responds with:

“We all have different ways of being born.”

The statement sounds like a joke or philosophical observation, but Cyrus finds something about it disturbing.

Most importantly, Nova does not seem to realize how strange Havenfall is at the same level Cyrus does.

She was born in a hospital. She came from Ravenport. Yet after entering Havenfall, she is surrounded by people who accept impossible events, unexplained disappearances, strange rituals, and supernatural locations as part of everyday life.

That makes her position increasingly ambiguous.

Trivia

Nova's biggest narrative function may be that she provides a normal-person perspective on Havenfall.

Cyrus sees patterns.

Emily follows them.

Anthony appears to understand them.

Nova mostly experiences them.

Her outsider status also makes the line about different ways of being born particularly interesting. Cyrus specifically connects her birthplace to the Hole, and Nova's response unintentionally raises the possibility that birth in Havenfall may not mean the same thing for everyone.

She is also one of the characters who physically encounters the strange book in the Rollercoaster Park. The fact that she hears the whisper “Read it” is important because not everyone present hears it.

And there's a subtle contrast between Nova and Cyrus:

Cyrus is suspicious because things don't make sense. Nova is suspicious only after things stop being fun.

That difference could become very important as Havenfall's reality becomes harder for even the socially optimistic characters to dismiss.
