Relationships
- Matt Mathens — Her romantic partner. Their relationship is possessive and complicated. Matt calls her “my property,” controls aspects of her appearance and behavior, and becomes protective of her. Billie nevertheless seeks his approval and reassurance. Their relationship becomes even stranger after her encounter with the Mathens family and her transformation-like episode.
- Cyrus Karmen — Cyrus's former romantic attachment. Their relationship ends after Billie cheats on him with Matt. Her betrayal becomes one of the major emotional events shaping Cyrus's detachment.
- Andrew Mathens — Initially Matt's older brother, but his significance to Billie changes dramatically. After Mavis's green-smoke incident, Billie wakes calling Andrew's name affectionately, travels toward him, and later kisses and injects him with a syringe. The exact nature of her attachment to Andrew remains unexplained.
- Mavis Mathens — Treats Billie warmly and quickly includes her within the family environment, but later gives Billie the mysterious green substance that leaves her unconscious. Mavis describes it as something intended to help Billie “relax.”
- Beatrice Whitmore — Matt's butler and one of the people responsible for looking after Billie after her collapse. Beatrice treats her as someone under Matt's protection and monitors her condition.
- The Mathens Family — Billie is an outsider attempting to enter an extremely established family structure. Andrew welcomes her; Mavis embraces her; Belladonna evaluates her; Matt tries to control her presence; the guards initially refuse her entry. Her position within the family is therefore constantly shifting.
- Emily — No direct relationship established yet, but both characters become involved in the strange mechanisms surrounding Havenfall, the Hole, and the Edenus Foundation.
Hobbies
- Spending time with people she is emotionally attached to.
- Going out socially.
- Dressing up for important occasions.
- Preparing food and meals.
- Talking with people she trusts.
- Spending time with Matt.
- Participating in social gatherings, particularly when she feels welcomed.
Backstory
Billie's early appearances establish her as someone deeply affected by attachment and abandonment. Cyrus first encounters her alone and distressed, and their conversations gradually become a routine. The routine develops into emotional dependency, eventually becoming a relationship.
That relationship collapses when Billie cheats on Cyrus with Matt Mathens. Even after forgetting Cyrus's birthday and betraying him, she continues moving through relationships in search of security and belonging.
With Matt, Billie enters a considerably more complicated environment. Matt is possessive and socially powerful, while Billie is frequently uncertain about how she fits into his world. She nevertheless becomes increasingly involved with the Mathens family after Andrew personally invites her to their gathering.
At the Mathens estate, Billie is initially treated as an outsider. Andrew, however, immediately welcomes her, calls her “lil sis,” feeds her, and invites her to return. His acceptance contrasts sharply with the family's formal hierarchy and Matt's discomfort.
The situation changes after Mavis gives Billie the mysterious green substance. Billie later wakes with an apparently normal body and normal medical results, yet something about her behavior has changed. She escapes Matt's residence, creates a fake sleeping body, injures herself jumping from a second-floor window, and repeatedly follows the path while calling “Andrew.”
Later, she appears in Martin's underground facility in a pale, weakened state. Matt carries her back to Victor's estate, where medical examinations reveal no obvious physical or psychological explanation for what happened.
Then her behavior becomes even stranger.
She kisses Andrew and injects him with a syringe she cannot explain possessing. She is capable of lifting him effortlessly despite having recently appeared physically weak. Yet afterward she behaves toward Matt almost exactly as she did before, asking for a date, worrying about him, and telling him that only he can heal her.
This creates one of Billie's central mysteries:
Is Billie changing, or is something using Billie while leaving her original personality intact?
The story deliberately hasn't answered that yet.
Trivia
Billie's relationship with Cyrus and her relationship with Matt create an important contrast in the story: Cyrus observes her emotionally, while Matt attempts to possess and control her.
Her repeated use of “Andrew” is particularly significant because it occurs without a clear explanation of why she suddenly becomes attached to him.
Her body also behaves strangely. She survives the second-floor jump, later appears physically altered, carries Andrew with apparently impossible strength, and yet Dr. Zen's examinations find nothing medically abnormal.
One of the biggest clues surrounding Billie is that her conscious explanations don't match her actions. She doesn't know where the syringe came from. She doesn't know why she injected Andrew. She doesn't know why she escaped. She simply describes these actions as feeling “right.”
That makes Billie less like a conventional supernatural character and more like a character caught between what she wants, what she remembers, and what something else wants her to do.
