Relationships
- Billie Kagon — His partner. Their relationship is affectionate in places but strongly possessive. Matt refers to Billie as his “property” and frequently directs her behavior, yet he also shows genuine concern for her safety and wellbeing. Her unexplained transformation later becomes one of the biggest threats to his understanding of her.
- Andrew Mathens — His older brother. Andrew is socially effortless, humorous, and naturally influential, while Matt is more controlled and serious. Matt's posture changes when Andrew arrives, suggesting that Andrew's presence affects him more than Matt openly acknowledges.
- Victor Kenethe Mathens — His father. Victor is authoritative and commands Matt's respect. Matt tries to maintain his independence but still operates within Victor's family hierarchy.
- Martin Mathens — His younger brother. Martin's death becomes one of Matt's central motivations. Investigating Martin eventually reveals that Martin had been researching something far larger than his family initially understood.
- Thomas Mathens III — Family member involved in the family's leadership structure and Martin's investigation. Thomas and Matt appear capable of discussing family matters strategically.
- Belladonna Mathens — A powerful family member whose authority Matt respects but sometimes challenges. Their disagreement over discussing succession demonstrates Matt's concern with timing and control.
- Mavis Mathens IV — Family member who immediately welcomes Billie. Matt is less comfortable with how freely Mavis brings Billie into the family environment.
- Beatrice Whitmore — Matt's personal butler. She is trusted with his household and with caring for Billie when Matt is away.
- Cyrus Karmen — Their connection is indirect, but Billie connects the two characters. Cyrus's relationship with Billie ended because of Matt, making Matt an important figure in Cyrus's emotional history.
Hobbies
- Not many conventional hobbies are established. His observable interests include:
- Driving.
- Maintaining his Aston Martin.
- Exercising/running.
- Spending time with Billie.
- Attending family and social gatherings.
- Investigating Martin's research.
- Visiting the places associated with his family's business.
- Maintaining his personal routines.
Backstory
Matt Mathens is introduced through his relationship with Billie and quickly establishes himself as a powerful, wealthy, and possessive figure.
He is a celebrity and a member of the Mathens family, a wealthy dynasty whose influence extends far beyond ordinary social status.
His relationship with Billie demonstrates his need for control. He dictates aspects of her clothing, calls her “my property,” and becomes visibly uncomfortable when another man speaks to her. His jealousy isn't subtle.
Yet Matt isn't simply cruel toward her.
He remembers details about her, worries about her safety, arranges for Beatrice to care for her, and later watches over her while she is unconscious. When Billie suddenly changes after Mavis's intervention, Matt is one of the first people to realize that something isn't right.
This contradiction is important:
Matt wants to control Billie, but he can't control what is happening to Billie.
His family storyline begins with Martin's death.
At the Mathens gathering, Matt initially refuses to discuss inheritance or leadership because he wants the family to focus on finding Martin's murderer. This reveals that despite his ambition, he isn't willing to treat Martin's death simply as an opportunity for succession.
The investigation changes when Matt and Andrew discover Martin's underground facility.
The bunker contains photographs, maps, documents, recordings, blueprints of the Edenus Foundation, extensive research into the Hole of Havenfall, and information about people throughout the city.
Matt realizes that Martin wasn't simply indulging in conspiracy theories.
Martin had discovered something real.
The discovery of the mysterious book makes things even more serious. Matt immediately refuses to let the book leave their possession, saying he would rather burn it than allow it to fall into unknown hands.
That instinct becomes justified when the book eventually becomes connected to the larger supernatural events.
Then Billie appears inside the bunker in a weakened, pale state.
Matt carries her out himself.
After reaching Victor's estate, however, Billie's behavior becomes increasingly impossible to understand. She wakes normally, passes medical tests, and behaves affectionately toward Matt—yet she has already done things she cannot explain, including attacking Andrew and displaying abnormal strength.
Matt recognizes that something has changed.
And for someone whose personality revolves around control, this is probably one of the most significant problems he has encountered:
He cannot determine what happened to Billie, and he cannot simply force the answer out of the situation.
Trivia
Matt's relationship with Andrew is particularly revealing.
Andrew can walk into a room and effortlessly attract everyone's attention. Matt doesn't need that kind of social gravity. He has authority because of who he is and where he stands.
When Andrew calls him “Little brother,” Matt subtly reclaims his personal space.
That tells us a lot without Matt having to say it.
His relationship with Victor is different again. Victor doesn't need Andrew's charm or Matt's assertiveness. His authority is quieter and more absolute.
So the three men represent different forms of power:
Andrew — social influence.
Matt — personal authority and control.
Victor — institutional/familial authority.
And Matt sits between them.
Another interesting contradiction is his relationship with Billie. He genuinely appears to care about her, but his language and behavior repeatedly reduce her independence.
Then the supernatural events reverse the dynamic.
Matt becomes the one asking:
“What's happening to Billie?”
while Billie becomes the person he can no longer understand or control.
That makes her transformation particularly threatening to him—not simply because he loves her, but because it attacks one of the fundamental assumptions underlying his personality: that if he pays enough attention and has enough authority, he can keep things under control.
