Relationships
- Matt Mathens — Younger brother. Andrew calls him “Little brother” and constantly teases him. Their relationship appears genuinely affectionate, although Andrew's effortless social dominance can make Matt subtly defensive.
- Martin Mathens — Younger brother whose death motivates Andrew's investigation. Martin's hidden research becomes one of the biggest mysteries Andrew encounters.
- Victor Kenethe Mathens — Father. Andrew respects Victor's authority but is comfortable enough to joke around him and approach him with important discoveries.
- Billie Kagon — Andrew immediately accepts Billie into the family environment. He calls her “lil sis,” feeds her, invites her to the family gathering, and treats her with warmth. This is particularly significant because Matt initially wants her excluded.
- Mavis Mathens IV — Family member with whom Andrew shares the family's relaxed social atmosphere.
- Belladonna Mathens — Sister/family authority figure. Andrew participates in the family discussions surrounding Martin and succession.
- Thomas Mathens III — Family member involved in the investigation into Martin.

Backstory
Andrew Mathens is introduced at the Edenus Seaside Party, and the narration immediately establishes something unusual about him.
He doesn't need to announce himself.
People notice him.
Conversations break. Heads turn. People smile. Space opens around him.
There is no obvious threat or command behind it. People simply seem to want to be near him.
This is perhaps his defining characteristic.
Andrew possesses a form of social power that differs from Matt's.
Matt enters a room as someone people recognize.
Andrew enters a room as someone people respond to.
When he meets Billie, he immediately treats her like family. He hugs her, remembers her name, feeds her, calls her “lil sis,” and invites her to another family gathering.
Matt watches this happen without stopping him.
Andrew therefore becomes the first Mathens family member to give Billie a genuine sense that she belongs.
His relationship with Matt is much more playful. He calls him “Little brother,” jokes about him not enjoying the party, and openly observes Matt's behavior.
But Andrew's personality becomes more serious after Martin's death.
He joins Matt in investigating Martin's hidden facility and eventually discovers an enormous underground research complex containing photographs, maps, notes, recordings, Havenfall research, Hole documentation, and Edenus Foundation blueprints.
Andrew immediately understands that this isn't some ordinary conspiracy board.
Martin had been investigating something real.
They eventually discover the mysterious leather-bound book written in an unknown language. Andrew is initially playful about their failure to identify it, but he becomes serious when the implications become clear.
When Billie appears in the bunker, apparently transformed and barely conscious, Andrew helps Matt get her out and carries the mysterious book back to Victor's estate.
There, Andrew's relationship with his father becomes particularly interesting.
Victor immediately recognizes the book.
Andrew notices.
He asks whether Martin ever told Victor about it.
Victor stops moving.
He doesn't answer.
Andrew therefore becomes one of the people standing directly at the intersection between the Mathens family mystery and the Havenfall supernatural mystery.
Trivia
Andrew's entrance is one of the clearest examples of showing power instead of explaining it.
The narration doesn't say:
“Andrew was extremely influential.”
Instead, the crowd reacts to him before he has actually done anything.
That's important because Andrew's influence seems almost instinctive.
Another interesting trait is how quickly he incorporates Billie into the family.
Matt treats Billie as something he possesses.
The Mathens guards treat her as an outsider.
Andrew treats her like family.
That makes his later connection to her extremely important.
After Mavis's green-smoke incident, Billie escapes and repeatedly calls “Andrew.”
Eventually she finds him in the underground facility and later kisses and injects him.
So the person who initially made Billie feel most welcome inside the Mathens family becomes the person she inexplicably seeks out.
And there is an especially strange parallel:
Andrew's greatest strength is his ability to make people gravitate toward him naturally.
Later, Billie appears to gravitate toward Andrew in a way that is no longer socially explainable.
Whether those two things are connected is still unknown.
Andrew is not simply the “fun brother.”
His humor is real, but beneath it he's capable of conducting a serious investigation, recognizing when Martin's research matters, confronting Victor with uncomfortable questions, and functioning in environments that would unsettle most people.
He jokes constantly.
But he is paying attention.
