Relationships

  • H / “Her Beloved” — The most important and mysterious relationship in Emily's story. H claims to love her, calls her his “chosen lover,” and promises that they will eventually be united. Emily has no clear memory of the relationship's origin, yet she experiences an intense feeling of familiarity and love toward H. The letters increasingly dictate her actions.
  • Alexander Stiles — Emily's father and leader within the Edenus Foundation. Alexander appears to know far more about Emily's role than she does. His conversation with Anthony establishes that Emily is part of a larger process involving the “Chosen One.”
  • Ethan Stiles — Emily's younger brother. Their relationship is affectionate and playful. Emily calls him a gremlin, carries him around, and helps put him to bed.
  • Levi Stiles — Family member who participates in the household's structure and helps care for Ethan.
  • Anthony Matthews — One of the people facilitating Emily's journey. He delivers H's letters and later gives her instructions at Legends Motel. His behavior toward Emily is helpful on the surface but deeply disturbing in context.
  • Cyrus Karmen — Cyrus becomes an observer of Emily's strange circumstances. He follows her, investigates the letters, and gradually realizes that she is connected to the Hole and Anthony.
  • Nova Zahwane — Friend and member of the college group. Emily explores Rollercoaster Park with Nova and the others.
  • Simon — Friend whose death becomes horrifyingly connected to Emily when she is unknowingly given his remains to eat.

  • Playing with Ethan.
  • Taking photographs.
  • Exploring unusual places with her friends.
  • Listening to music.
  • Socializing.

  • Singing.
  • Spending time outdoors.

Backstory

Emily initially appears to be a fairly ordinary member of Nova's social circle. She spends time with friends, explores Havenfall, takes photographs, and participates in their visit to the abandoned Rollercoaster Park.

But the events surrounding her gradually reveal that Emily is connected to something much larger.

After the Rollercoaster Park incident, Emily receives a mysterious letter signed “— H.” The letter instructs her to visit Kafka Cemetery, carve E + H into an old tree, return at midnight, and wait beneath it until she falls asleep.

Emily follows the instructions.

She doesn't know exactly who H is, but the writing feels familiar to her. When she sees the letter, she recognizes the handwriting and immediately describes the writer as “My love.”

This pattern continues.

Anthony later places another letter beside her while she sleeps. The message calls her “my one and only chosen lover” and claims that H has been bending “the very strings of the universe” to keep her safe.

Emily is then instructed to go to Kingsmere.

She follows.

At Legends Motel, Anthony gives her uncooked meat and orders her to cook and eat it. She obeys without understanding why. After eating, she follows mysterious red footprints and discovers Simon's corpse.

The experience devastates her because she realizes that someone she trusted has effectively used her.

Yet the following morning, another letter from H restores her sense of peace.

This is where Emily's character becomes particularly disturbing.

Rather than breaking her faith, every traumatic experience seems to push her closer to H.

Meanwhile, Alexander's conversation with Anthony reveals the larger framework.

Alexander describes Emily's role through the metaphor of a seed: it must struggle beneath the soil, endure darkness and pressure, and eventually emerge transformed.

He explicitly explains that the Chosen One must be cultivated.

They are supposed to suffer.

They are supposed to be given opportunities to abandon their faith.

And if they continue believing despite everything, they become worthy.

This means Emily's suffering isn't necessarily an accidental consequence of the story's supernatural events.

It may be part of the process.

By Chapter 8, Emily walks into the Edenus Foundation willingly and reads H's poem, “TOGETHER ONE.”

The poem describes giving away fear, giving away her name, burying her old self, giving away pain, and ultimately stripping away her physical body so she can become united with H.

She enters the Hall of Dominion without hesitation.

At this point, Emily's trajectory has gone from:

ordinary young woman → curious explorer → recipient of mysterious messages → manipulated participant → devoted believer → apparent chosen subject.

Trivia

Emily's most important contradiction is that she is repeatedly given reasons to distrust H, yet each ordeal seems to strengthen her attachment to him.

The letters don't merely tell her that H loves her.

They gradually redefine what love means:

love becomes obedience, suffering, sacrifice, forgetting, and finally transformation.

Her poem makes the progression especially explicit.

The line about giving her name away is particularly interesting because names and identity have already been important throughout the story. Cyrus repeatedly identifies himself by name and date, while Emily's poem suggests that she is willing to surrender hers.

Likewise, the line about having no need for a body suggests that Emily's transformation may eventually be more than psychological.

And Alexander's gardening metaphor makes the whole thing even darker:

He isn't waiting for Emily to discover who she is.

He believes she is something that must be cultivated into what she is supposed to become.

That makes Emily one of the clearest characters through whom the story explores faith versus free will.
