- People interfering with whatever task he has been assigned.

Fears
- Largely unknown. When speaking with Alexander, Anthony admits that he has seen things he cannot explain, which suggests:
- The things he has witnessed but cannot explain.
- Losing control of the events he has been assigned to facilitate.
- Failing whatever purpose Alexander believes he has been chosen for.
Relationships
- Alexander Stiles — Anthony appears to operate within Alexander's sphere of influence. Alexander tells him that a vision predicted Anthony would arrive and help prepare what comes next. Anthony accepts this despite admitting that he has witnessed things he cannot explain.
- Emily — Anthony repeatedly assists or facilitates events involving Emily. He delivers the mysterious letter to her at Kafka Cemetery and later appears at Legends Motel to guide her through an unexplained ordeal. His role toward her is deeply ambiguous: he helps her, but he also participates in situations where she is clearly being manipulated.
- Cyrus Karmen — Cyrus becomes increasingly suspicious of Anthony. He watches Anthony's movements, follows him from the Hole, and eventually investigates his house. Cyrus concludes that Anthony is connected to Martin's death, while Elizabeth goes further and says he may have killed Martin and then saved him.
- Nova Zahwane — Anthony helps Nova with Physics 101 and later assists her and the others at the Rollercoaster Park. To Nova, he initially appears dependable and helpful.
- Martin Mathens — Anthony's connection to Martin is one of the major unresolved mysteries. Evidence found in Anthony's house connects him to Martin, while Cyrus discovers what appears to be a body resembling Martin.
- The Edenus Foundation — Anthony appears to have an operational role within the Foundation. He speaks with Alexander, understands some of the Foundation's activities, and participates in preparations surrounding Emily and the coming events.
Hobbies
- Not enough is known to establish genuine hobbies. His observable activities include:
- Investigating unusual locations.
- Assisting people.
- Following instructions.
- Moving through Havenfall's hidden spaces.
- Handling information and objects connected to the Foundation.
- Monitoring situations without drawing attention to himself.
Backstory
Anthony Matthews initially appears to be one of the most dependable people in Havenfall.
When Martin Mathens is found hanging at the campus gate, Anthony immediately takes control of the situation. He puts on gloves, contacts the authorities, coordinates the removal of the body, and restores order while everyone else is reacting emotionally.
Later, he helps Nova with Physics 101 and assists her when her sister is trapped in detention. To the people around him, Anthony therefore develops a reputation as someone who helps.
But the story gradually complicates that image.
At the abandoned Rollercoaster Park, Anthony leads the group through the building and disappears during the collapse of the basement. He later emerges from the destruction seemingly unharmed, while Nova briefly sees something dark and nonhuman behind him.
He subsequently becomes connected to Emily's strange journey.
Anthony follows Emily's movements, delivers the mysterious letters connected to “H,” and eventually waits for her at Legends Motel. There, he gives her uncooked meat and tells her to cook and eat it without explaining why.
The consequences are horrifying.
Meanwhile, Anthony is revealed to have a relationship with Alexander and the Edenus Foundation. Alexander tells him that the vision predicted his arrival and that Anthony will help prepare what comes next.
Anthony's response is particularly important:
He admits that he has seen things he cannot explain.
So despite his mysterious behavior, he isn't necessarily the mastermind who understands everything.
The investigation into Martin makes Anthony even more suspicious. Cyrus and Elizabeth discover weapons and evidence inside Anthony's house, including a phone connected to Martin and what appears to be a body resembling him.
Elizabeth summarizes the apparent contradiction:
“I think you mean he killed him. And then saved him.”
The story has not yet confirmed exactly what Anthony did to Martin.
Trivia
Anthony's defining contradiction is:
He is repeatedly introduced through acts of help, while the deeper the story investigates him, the more suspicious he becomes.
He helps Nova.
He helps Emily.
He helps during the Rollercoaster Park disaster.
He handles Martin's corpse.
He delivers Emily's letters.
He works with Alexander.
He appears connected to Martin's death.
He may have saved Martin after killing him.
And somehow, through all of this, Anthony remains remarkably calm.
Another important detail is his lack of eye contact with Emily at Legends Motel. He sits beside the window without greeting her or looking at her, answers her questions flatly, gives her an instruction, and leaves.
That makes the scene feel less like Anthony is interacting with Emily as a normal person and more like he's performing a specific function in a process.
Which fits perfectly with his broader characterization:
Anthony doesn't feel like the person controlling the machine. He feels like one of the people who knows how to operate it.
