MendyLoves has questions after a friend delivered one of the most concerning declarations of love she has ever heard.
A friend recently told me:
“I don't care if I fall in love with a devil, as long as that devil will love me the way he loves Hell.”
I have spent an unreasonable amount of time thinking about this sentence.
Not because it's romantic.
I'm trying to figure out whether my friend needs a boyfriend, a priest, or both.
Apparently, this was supposed to be a declaration of loyalty.
And honestly?
I understand the sentiment.
Wanting someone who loves you deeply is nice. Wanting someone who would go to Hell for you is also nice.
But why does he already live there?
Let's start with the obvious problem.
If your ideal relationship begins with identifying your potential partner as a devil, perhaps we should slow down before exchanging phone numbers.
There is a difference between:
“He's a little toxic.”
and
“He's Lucifer's regional manager.”
Ladies, please.
I am all for loving someone despite their flaws. Nobody is perfect. Your boyfriend might be stubborn, emotionally unavailable, terrible at replying to messages, or have the personality of a wet cardboard box.
Those things can be worked on.
Demonic possession is where I draw the line.
My friend then explained that she doesn't care what her lover is, as long as he loves her completely.
And that part actually made me think.
Because underneath all the dramatic language, that's what most people want.
They want someone who chooses them.
Someone who makes them feel safe.
Someone who doesn't make them wonder whether they're being loved or merely tolerated.
That's beautiful.
But please don't confuse intensity with love.
Someone screaming that they'll destroy the world for you isn't automatically more romantic than someone remembering how you take your coffee.
Sometimes love is dramatic.
Sometimes it's someone saving you the last slice of pizza.
And sometimes, apparently, it's a demon loving you with the same enthusiasm he has for Hell.
Personally?
I'll take the pizza.
So to my friend:
If you meet a devil who genuinely loves you, respects you, communicates properly, remembers your birthday, doesn't manipulate you, and somehow manages to stay out of prison...
Congratulations.
You've found a unicorn.
Just don't introduce him to me.

P.S. If your boyfriend actually has horns, please don't ask me for relationship advice. Ask someone with supernatural experience.
