Residents Mistake Exhausted Quarry Worker for Dead Body Floating in Water
It wasn't.
Police were eventually called to the site after several residents reported seeing what appeared to be a human body lying face-down in the quarry's water.
When officers arrived, they approached the suspected body and attempted to determine whether the person was alive.
The man suddenly woke up.
According to police, the individual was an exhausted quarry worker who had apparently entered the water after completing a shift and had fallen asleep while floating.
"He wasn't dead," one officer said. "He was just extremely tired."
The worker reportedly became confused when officers woke him and initially appeared unaware that several people had been watching him from the shoreline.
Residents said they had been observing the motionless figure for hours but were reluctant to approach the water themselves.
"I thought someone had drowned," one resident said. "He didn't move once."
Another resident said they had already begun discussing whether the quarry would need to be searched for evidence before police arrived.
Police confirmed that the man did not appear to have suffered any serious injuries.
Authorities have not said why the worker entered the quarry or whether he had permission to be in the area.
The incident ended without any arrests, although police reportedly advised the worker to find somewhere safer to sleep.
Residents, meanwhile, were left with an unusual explanation for what they had spent nearly five hours believing was a body.
