Western Ravenport University Announces Closure of Fourth-Floor East Wing
The announcement was made Monday morning through the university's student notification system, instructing students and staff to avoid the affected section of the building until further notice.
According to the notice, the closure was made after university maintenance personnel identified "several irregularities" during a routine inspection conducted over the weekend. The university did not specify what those irregularities were.
Students currently using classrooms and offices on the fourth floor have been temporarily relocated to other areas of the campus.
"We are taking the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our students and staff," a university spokesperson said. "There is currently no reason for students to be concerned."
The university has not announced how long the closure is expected to last.
However, the decision has already sparked speculation among students, particularly because the east wing was reportedly inspected less than six months ago following complaints about unusual noises coming from several classrooms after operating hours.
At the time, university officials said there was "no evidence of any structural or mechanical problem."
Some students also claim that the fourth-floor corridor had been partially inaccessible for several days before Monday's announcement, although the university has not confirmed this.
"I thought they were renovating something," said one second-year student who asked not to be identified. "Nobody really knew what was going on. The doors were locked, but there weren't any signs explaining why."
Another student claimed that security personnel were stationed near the stairwell leading to the east wing late Sunday evening.
The university declined to comment on whether additional security measures had been implemented.
Western Ravenport University, which currently has more than 20,000 students, has experienced several building closures over the years due to maintenance problems, renovations and safety inspections. Officials maintain that Monday's closure is unrelated to any previous incidents.
For now, students have been instructed to use the western stairwell and avoid the fourth-floor east corridor entirely.
A new inspection is expected to be conducted later this week.
The university has promised to provide another update once the inspection is complete.
