Students Turn to Street Work
Southern Ravenport — As financial pressure continues to affect residents across the southern districts, some students at the University of Ravenport are turning to informal work to afford their education.
Among them is Daniel Varek, a second-year engineering student who spends his evenings working as a vehicle guardian near busy streets surrounding the university campus.
Known locally as a "car guardian," Daniel watches over parked vehicles, helps drivers find safer parking spaces, and keeps an eye on the area during late hours. In return, vehicle owners provide small payments that help him cover tuition fees, transportation costs, and daily expenses.
"I didn't want to leave university because I couldn't afford it," Daniel said. "So I found something I could do after classes. It's not easy, but it keeps me here."
