Martin Mathens, was discovered hanging from the front entrance gates of Sterlinford College during the early morning hours on Monday. Police confirmed that the investigation found no indication that another individual was involved in his death.
Even so, members of the Mathens family say they struggle to accept the conclusion.
"We're not saying someone killed him," a relative told reporters. "We're asking why. Why there? Why would Martin choose the gates of a college? None of it makes sense to us."
Authorities have declined to speculate on the significance of the location, stating that investigators were unable to determine why Mathens traveled to the campus before taking his own life.
Students arriving for morning classes were met with an active police scene, forcing the college to delay lectures while officers secured the area. Counseling services were later made available to students and staff affected by the incident.
Friends described Mathens as a quiet individual who had become increasingly withdrawn in recent months, though none reported receiving any indication of his intentions.
Police reiterated that the case remains closed and encouraged anyone struggling with emotional distress to seek support from family, friends, or qualified professionals.
